Singapore is a country actively promoting bilingual education. Though the cost of education is competitive, the standard is undoubtedly high. Every child is given an opportunity to study English and absorb Chinese culture in an education system that has established a world-wide reputation. As a global education hub, Singapore is a recipient of many international students. Mothers of foreign students age 7 to 16 are permitted to stay with their children.
There are more than 300 Government Primary and Secondary schools in Singapore. Every local child from the age of 7 can apply for entrance to the 6-year Primary education.
International students may apply for admission to a school from Primary One to Primary Five level of education. Upon completion of their primary education, students will sit for the Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE), before proceeding to the secondary level.
The Secondary education system offers a 4-year course (Express Course/Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level) and a 5-year course (Normal Academic Course) which sits for Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘N’ Level in the 4th year and Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level at the end of the 5th year. International students may seek admission to join Secondary One to Secondary Three level of education. Upon completion of their Secondary education, students will sit for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level Examinations, to acquire a certificate of world-wide recognition.
International students who are interested in studying in mainstream government schools (primary and secondary) must take a centralized admission test conducted by the Ministry of Education (MOE). The test is held in September and October each year so that foreign students can join the schools in January of the following year. The Admissions Exercise for International Students (AEIS) will involve a centralised test on English and Mathematics.
International students who miss or failed the AEIS test and still wish to seek mainstream school admission, may sit for and pass the Supplementary Admissions Exercise for International Students (S-AEIS).
